COLLINGWOOD, ON (January 27, 2010) – The 2010 Miele Ontario FIS Championships concluded yesterday with overall gold being awarded to Ontario Ski Team athlete Morgan Megarry (Collingwood) and National Ski Academy’s Shannon Campbell (Clarksburg). Megarry won the final race of the series while Campbell came away with an impressive gold in SL, silver in GS and was 4th in the final GS. Conditions were near perfect according to all the races thanks to the ever- dedicated group of volunteers at the Georgian Peaks Ski Club.
OST’s Morgan Megarry (Collingwood) won the final GS with a time of 1.43.38 followed by Quebec’s Philippe Rivet in 1.43.53 and OST’s Dylan Fisher McCarney (Toronto) in 1.43.58. Megarry had his best series yet this season standing on the overall podium three times in four day including two bronze medals in addition to his gold.
“The snow was great, it held up really well. I had a nice first run, I felt better than my time showed. In my second run I messed up a bit at the top but charged as hard as I could after this and it seemed to pay off.”
The top three overall men of the series included Megarry 1st, Mike Bisnaire (AOA ODT) 2nd and Philippe Rivet (QC) 3rd.
In the women’s race it was Ontario Development Team’s Emily Goad (Arva) week in the GS. She won back to back gold medals finishing up her final run in 1.37.35. Following Goad with a time of 1.38.30 was National Ski Academy’s Marissa Riopelle, and Stephanie Gould of Mont Ste. Marie in 3rd with a time of 1.38.93.
Goad looked relaxed and very happy after her first-ever FIS win. “The course was a lot smoother, not at all like the end on Monday. It also helped to race at home on a course I’ve skied and raced hundreds of times.”
Riopelle spoke about confidence and return from injury. “This is my first decent GS result since my injury (she broke her leg in Nakiska last December). I have hardly made the flip in GS, mentally I’ve been holding back and today I just pushed my hands forward in my 2nd run and didn’t hold back.”
Overall women’s winner Shannon Campbell (Clarksburg) spoke about finding her confidence in this series.
“I haven’t felt great all season long. Now I’ve had more time to train and racing at home always feels good. Technically I’m all there but I have to work on finding more speed – that comes down to confidence and it is slow progress but this was a great series.”
Following Campbell in the overall standings was National Ski Academy’s Marissa Riopelle 2nd, Tianda Carroll (EASA) 3rd, Stephanie Gould (MSM, Ottawa) 4th and Ontario Development skier Mary Beth Hemphill (Uxbridge) in 5th place.
Hemphill, Gould, Caroll and Megarry are J1 racers meaning they are either 15 or 16, the youngest racers in the FIS circuit. The overall title was awarded to those athletes with the best combined SL race points and GS points.
The eastern FIS alpine circuit now moves back to Quebec with a set of speed events at Mont Ste. Anne commencing this Friday. FIS racing returns to Ontario at the end of February with GMC Cup SL races at Camp Fortune and GMC Cup GS at Georgian Peaks. .
