Brown and Remme Strike Gold in Super Combined at President's Choice® Canadian K2 Championships
After wins in Monday’s Super G races, both athletes take home second gold medals at these championships
Collingwood, ON (March 23, 2010) – The rain held out just long enough to allow 170 boys and girls ages 13 and 14 years old to complete the ultimate slalom segment of the super combined event at the 2010 President’s Choice Canadian K2 Championships. Building on their winning performances in Monday’s Super G championships race, Griffin Brown from Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont (USA) and Roni Remme from Team Ontario (Collingwood) took gold again but this time in the super combined event held at Osler Bluff.
Today's super combined race consisted of cumulative time results from a super G run completed on Monday, followed by a slalom run held today.
Brown, who was 6th headed into today’s slalom run was pleased to come out on top.
“No changes for me from yesterday,” said Brown. “I just stayed above the gate knowing it was a turny course. The snow was good and hard and the track is similar to my home mountain so maybe that helped,” added the young skier who is in his first racing experience in Canada and whose older sister – Mackenzie - is also a competitor at Burke racing on the FIS circuit.
Karl Kuus from Ontario settled for silver in the men’s super combined but was visibly disappointed to miss out on the gold in Tuesday’s race but remained optimistic on his day.
“I’m happy to win silver but I got twisted up at the bottom and lost some time there,” admitte Kuus. “The track was icy, good and I expected more ruts. I was confident going in, knew all eyes would be on my after winning yesterday but I like that – feels good to race under pressure.”
Rival Mitchell Brunning from the Craigleith Ski Club finished 3rd - a great result after heading into the slalom with the 21st fastest time of yesterday’s Super G run. Brunning was all smiles, admitting it felt great to reach the podium.
“I wasn’t expecting this at all so I certainly wasn’t thinking about any results but just to have fun and rip the course, attack,” said Brunning. “I also focused on my breathing trying to get a consistent rhythm,” he concluded.
For the ladies, it was Collingwood resident from the National Ski Academy – Roni Remme - who took gold for a second consecutive day.
“I skied a clean run,” said Remme. “Going in, I was 4th so I knew if I just did a good clean run I’d get on the podium. There isn’t too much pressure for me because no one could ever put as much pressure on me as I do myself. So I just have to focus on my skiing and the results will come,” she concluded.
Skiing on her home hill, teammate Meg Currie won silver after placing 12th in Monday’s Super G component.
“I was a bit nervous today because I didn’t finish my slalom Provincial run and it is my best event,” admitted Currie. “Aside from nerves, I have no regrets; I just wanted to finish well today. The Ontario team has been so supportive, all the coaches pitching in to help us out, it has been great so far,” she concluded.
The women’s super combined podium was rounded out by Adrienne Poitras from Quebec’s Tremblant Ski Club. Having clocked the 28th fastest time in the Super G run, Poitras put down a stellar slalom run – sufficient for a podium finish.
“Today is super exciting for me,” admitted Poitras who competed in her first Super G of the season on Monday after having suffered a broken wrist earlier in the winter. “I told my friends I was going to go out and get top 5 and they rolled their eyes knowing I was 28th in the SG. I am so excited with the final result,” added Poitras who was the overall Quebec champion from the Provincial Championships after she won both slalom events.
