COLLINGWOOD, ON (March 29, 2010) -- It’s a Wrap the President's Choice K2 National Championship ended with a bang!
The week started with some concerns about the weather, Graeme Buckrell and his very experienced crew defied the odds and the Super G and Super Combined Super G component ran without a hitch. In total there were 340 runners on the track and it held up perfectly. The races were won by Roni Remme of the National ski academy and Griffin Brown from the United States. Tuesday was the only day that we saw any cloud cover; the athletes each had a run of slalom to complete the super combined event. Despite the tough conditions the race crew at Osler made sure that all of the athletes were given a fair chance to race for the gold medals. Once again Roni and Griffin were victorious!
On Wednesday the show moved onto Georgian Peaks where Tomaz Senk, Prentice Smith and Trudy Twible (and many others) treated the women to rock hard conditions for the giant slalom under beautiful sunny skis. The girls raced down Rogers Run on both the skiers right and left. Once again Roni reached the podium, this time in second place behind BC’s Alix Wells.
Thursday the sun returned at Georgian Peaks where the men raced. Once again the track was perfect and the races were run impeccably. The fastest racer of the day was again USA’s Griffin Brown of Burke Mtn Academy (his 3rd gold) followed by Holimont NY/ Canadian racer Aaron Taylor and Devil’s Glen Karl Kuus in 3rd.
The final day of racing was hosted by Craigleith, and once again the athletes were greeted with sunny skis and a perfectly prepared race hill. Thanks to HCDC (Head Coach Dave Campbell), his coyotes (race crew) and management at Craigleith for ensuring all was race perfect for the conclusion of this 5-day event. Snow was moved overnight to prepare the track and Mother Nature contributed with below freezing temperatures setting up the track and providing the athletes with perfect racing conditions. As Jackie Stewart would say “it was a great day for ski racing”.
Ontario stepped up to provide a men’s Slalom sweep with Kuus in 1st, Thomas Trusler of Osler 2nd and Mitchell Brunning of Craigleith in 3rd. For the women Roni finished up her near-perfect event winning gold followed by Quebec Adrienne Poitras and BC’s Alix Wells.
Friday night, the event finished up with the Swiss Chalet East versus West dual slalom under the lights with western and eastern pride on the line. With the crowd cheering enthusiastically the west was victorious. Most of the coaches agreed that duals are a great way to end an event.
A huge thank you to President’s Choice for sponsoring the K2 National Championships -- as they say ‘feeding the home team’ is not just a tag line it is what they do! PC presented the coup de grace, a spectacular fireworks show to officially end the event.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the hundreds of people who volunteered their time and helped to make the event a screaming success. It is truly a pleasure to see the coordinated efforts of all the volunteers, coaches, club staff and last but not least the athletes for putting on a great show!
