OWEN SOUND SUN TIMES, Bill Walker
Owen Sound skier Larisa Yurkiw had a successful medical procedure completed on her injured left knee at a London hospital Wednesday, but she still won't be able to compete in the upcoming World Cup season.
Yurkiw's father Dennis said his daughter had her knee manipulated in hopes of returning some of its range of motion.
The 22-year-old Yurkiw tore her ACL and MCL in a crash on Dec. 16 at Val D'Isere, France.
The injured tendons have healed but she's still working on her flexibility in the knee.
"You end up healing sometimes too well," Dennis Yurkiw said Wednes-day.
"Now that it's secure and solid you have to get back the flexibility. That flexibility allows them to work out in the gym."
If there had been complications in Wednesday's procedure, Dennis Yurkiw said, his daughter was facing microsurgery on her knee.
"Psychologically this is a little bit of a blow for her but physically it's an important thing," said Yurkiw.
"She's made steady progress but it's been slow. This is going to move that (progress) ahead a little quicker."
Larisa Yurkiw was in Calgary last week along with fellow injured skier Kelly Vanderbeek. Alpine Canada medical officials were going to put the pair through a series of tests to determine the fitness of their injured knees.
But it was decided that the pair needed to have their injuries manipulated to improve the range of motion.
